Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that,
employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by fragments of
polyvinyl chloride
(PVC) plastic pipe in the event that the PVC plastic pipe ruptures.
Location: 7314 Nundy Avenue, Gibsonton FL 33760.
a. In the canopy ceiling area that houses five balers and a trailer dock
station,
PVC plastic piping was used in exposed above ground locations to transport
compressed air at pressures of around 80 psi for air operated equipment and
for cleaning purposes. Violation observed on 09/28/2011.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to
use cast iron piping or Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) piping in
accordance
with ANSI/ASME B31.8-1986, Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems
standard.
