General-duty citation text
Nevada Revised Statute 618.375(1): Duties of employers. Every employer shall furnish employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees. The establishment's place of employment was not free from a recognized serious hazard: a. PVC pipe was used in the production area to transport compressed air in above ground/unprotected installations to provide pnuematic air pressure to various tools and equipment. Employees were exposed to possible serious injuries or permanent disability (such as lacerations or impalement from plastic shrapnel), or death, from hazards associated with the potential explosive rupture of the PVC pipe used to channel compressed air. REFERENCE: The hazards involved with the use of polyvinyl chloride pipe for the flow of compressed air have been addressed in the OSHA Hazard Information Bulletin, dated May 20, 1988. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to encase the PVC pipe in conduit or shatter-resistant material or replace with metal (copper or steel) pipe.)
