Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not
furnish employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or
likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to employees:
(a)Date of Violation:02/24/12
Location:Chemistry Large Storeroom
Condition:The hazardous chemicals observed included, but were not limited
to, ammonium
hydroxide, 28-30, a highly corrosive material, where four plumbed
eyewashes inside
the storeroom did not provide a sufficient amount of clean flushing fluid
and did not
provide spray heads protection from contaminants.
Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method of abatement to
correct these hazards is to comply
with ANSI Z358.1 which includes protecting the spray heads from airborne
contaminants, ensuring that the
water supply is capable of delivering clean, sufficient flow and volume of
flushing fluid for the required
amount of time, inspecting the eyewashes regularly to ensure that they are
accessible and free of dirt and
debris, and testing plumbed eyewashes regularly to ensure that the proper
flow rate is maintained.
Abatement documentation (photographs, receipts, copies of programs,
training certification, etc.)
is required for this item.
