Title 40.1-51.1(a) Code of Virginia: The employer, Micron Technology Inc.,
did not furnish employment and a
place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or
serious bodily harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
hydrofluoric acid during a demolition
operation.
On February 9, 2012, at 9600 Godwin Drive, Manassas, Virginia, an employee
of Craftcorp was working to
remove an approximately 80 ft long hydrofluoric acid line. Prior to
removal, it was Micron Technology
Incorporated's duty to ensure that the line was properly decontaminated.
Part of the decontamination process
was to purge the line for at least one hour by blowing the line dry with
nitrogen. According to Micron's
documents, the line was not purged at all. In accordance with the MTV
Equipment Decontamination and
Defacilitation Form and previously established procedures for a demolition
operation, it is both  Micron
Technology Inc. and Craftcorp's responsibility to verify  that the
decontamination procedures were completed.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct
this hazard is for the employer to
follow previously established procedures that ensure the decontamination
process is complete.nation
