North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of North
Carolina:  The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm
to employees in that employees were exposed to
a)glue spraying area, one employee, using Slocum Adhesives S-5301 glue
spray adhesive
(containing 50-751-bromopropane), was sampled and found to be exposed to
59.62
parts per million (PPM) of 1-bromopropane, as an eight (8) hour time
weighted average
(TWA).  Both the manufacturer's recommended exposure limit and the US
Environmental Protection Agency's proposed exposure limit to
1-bromopropane is 25
parts per million as an eight hour time weighted average concentration.
b)glue spraying area, one employee, using Slocum Adhesives S-5301 glue
spray adhesive
(containing 50-751-bromopropane), was sampled and found to be exposed to
43.83
parts per million (PPM) of 1-bromopropane, as an eight (8) hour time
weighted average
(TWA). Both the manufacturer's recommended exposure limit and the US
Environmental
Protection Agency's proposed exposure limit to 1-bromopropane is 25 parts
per million
as an eight hour time weighted average concentration.
c)glue spraying area, one employee, using Slocum Adhesives S-5301 glue
spray adhesive
(containing 50-751-bromopropane), was sampled and found to be exposed to
89.55
parts per million (PPM) of 1-bromopropane, as an eight hour time weighted
average
concentration.  Both the manufacturer's recommended exposure limit and the
US
Environmental Protection Agency's proposed exposure limit to
1-bromopropane is 25
parts per million as an eight hour time weighted average concentration.
d)glue spraying area, one employee, using Slocum Adhesives S-5301 glue
spray adhesive
(containing 50-751-bromopropane), was sampled and found to be exposed to
64.54
parts per million (PPM), as an eight hour time weighted average
concentration.  Both the
manufacturer's recommended exposure limit and the US Environmental
Protection
Agency's proposed exposure limit to 1-bromopropane is 25 parts per million
as an eight
hour time weighted average concentration.
ABATEMENT NOTE:
Among other measures, one acceptable method of abating this violation
would be revising and
improving the local exhaust ventilation system by enhancing the flow rate
and capture velocity
of the system.  Another alternative would consist of substituting Slocum
Adhsives S-5301 with
a non-toxic glue adhesive.
