North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck or crushed by the automotive lift and the load lifted in the event of a failure: a)shop area- employees operated two Western, floor-mounted, 2 post automotive lift (unable to locate serial numbers) with a maximum capacity of 7,000 lbs, and 7,200 lbs. The employer did not inspect the automotive lifts annually as called for by the American National Standard for Automotive Lifts. b)shop area- employees operated two Western, Floor-mounted, 2 post automotive lift (unable to locate serial numbers) with a maximum capacity of 7,000 lbs., and 7,200 lbs. The lifts were not inspected every 30 days as called for by the maintenance section of the manufacturers recommendations. c)shop area- employees operated two Western, floor-mounted, 2 post automotive lift (unable to locate serial numbers) with a maximum capacity of 7,000lbs, and 7,200 lbs. The operators were not trained in the safe operation of the automotive lifts. d)shop area- employees operated two Western, floor-mounted, 2 post automotive lift (unable to locate serial numbers) with a maximum capacity of 7,000 lbs, and 7,200 lbs. The employer did not conduct daily inspections of the lifts being used. Among other means of abatement, one feasible method would be to follow the guidelines laid out in ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2008 American National Standard for Automotive Lifts, and the manufacturer's guidelines Instruction Manual for the WESTERN floor-mounted 2 post lifts. NOTE: Western, floor-mounted, 2 post automotive lift. 1a. On page 3 in the Western, floor-mounted, 2 post automotive lift manufacturer recommendations booklet the company indicates that a 30 day maintenance inspection be performed on the automotive lifts. Among other means of abatement, one feasible method would be to follow the guidelines laid out in the American National Standard for Automotive Lifts. (2008 Edition). NOTE: ANSI/ALI ALOIM:2008 American National Standard for Automotive Lifts details the following: 1b. 5.5 Qualified Inspection Frequency. The owner of employer shall ensure that the points presented in 5.6 are inspected by a qualified lift inspector as a minimum annual requirement. 1c. 4.2.1 Operators of the automotive lifts were not trained and instructed in the safe operation of the lift using the manufacturer-provided instructions and warning labels and the Automotive Lift Institute publications. 4.3 This training shall be documented using the training log found in the appendix to this standard. NOTE: Operator training as described by the American national Standard for Automotive Lifts indicate the training be documented by using the training log found in the appendix to this standard. 1d. 5.5 Qualified inspection frequency. inspections by the owner or employer shall follow the recommendations of the lift manufacturer. This inspection shall follow the points outlined in section 5.6, and these items are to be inspected by a qualified lift inspector as a minimum annual requirement..
