North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of North Carolina:  The
employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment
and a place of employment free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to employees in that
employees were exposed to a fire hazard:
a)Room D224 - where the natural gas emergency shut off switch located on
the instructor's desk
did not function properly.  The switch did not effectively isolate the gas
supply from the
appliance(s) located on the students' desks throughout the classroom.
b)Room E214 -  where the natural gas emergency shut off switch located on
the instructor's desk
did not function properly.  The switch did not effectively isolate the gas
supply from the
appliance(s) located on the students' desks throughout the classroom.
c)Room E223 - where the natural gas emergency shut off switch located on
the instructor's desk
did not function properly.  The switch did not effectively isolate the gas
supply from the
appliance(s) located on the students' desks throughout the classroom.
Abatement Note:
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to prevent this
hazard is to comply with the National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 54-2012, the National Fuel Gas
Code.  Reference paragraph 11.3
requires, in part, that "where the (safety shutoff) device does not
function properly to turn off the gas supply in
the event of pilot outage or other improper operation, it shall be
properly serviced or replace with a new
device."
