Nevada Revised Statute 618.375(1): Duties of employers. Every employer shall furnish employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his or her employees. Within the outside exhibit at the Las Vegas Convention Center, employees were exposed to crushing and struck-by hazards in the event of an aerial lift tipping over as a result of using the basket (maximum load: 1,000 pounds) of the aerial lift to hoist aluminum trusses (arches). The operator was operating the aerial lift from within the basket while hoisting the trusses. There was approximately 220 pounds (weight of operator) within the basket and approximately 750 pounds (aluminum trusses) outside of the platform of the basket. The slings being used to hoist the trusses were connected to the uprights and midrails of the guardrails of the basket of the aerial lift. References: 1) Aerial lift manufacturer (make: Genie, model: S-80X, serial number: S 30X129229): - Manual: Work Area Safety (page 15): Do not place or attach overhanging loads to any part of this machine. - Decal that was attached to the aerial lift: Do not place or attach overhanging loads to any part of this machine. 2) American National Standards Institute (ANSI): ANSI/ALI A92.5-1992: Boom- Supported Elevating Work Platforms: - Paragraph 7.11.11 Misuse as a crane (Responsibilities of users): The aerial platform shall not be used as a crane. - Paragraph 8.10.12 Misuse as a crane (Responsibilities of operators): The aerial platform shall not be used as a crane. One feasible and acceptable means of abatement is to follow the manufacturer's requirements, as well as the requirements of ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000, and use equipment that is designed and rated for hoisting material such as the aluminum trusses.
