What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons: routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Hazardous substances F118

Nevada Revised Statute 618.375(1): Duties of employers. Every employer
shall furnish
employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized
hazards that are causing
or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his or her
employees.
Employees are exposed to isoflurane above the NIOSH recommended level of 2
ppm
while performing surgical procedures on small animals when anesthetic gas,
isoflurane,
is used to anesthetize animals.
One feasable means of abatement would be to improve the efficiency of the
exhaust in
the southwest corner of the surgical room to increase the air changes per
hour in the
room. Also, evaluate the efficiency of the ventilation system with the
door to the surgical
room open and when its closed. These actions should lower the exposure
level to
isoflurance below the NIOSH recommended eposure level of 2 ppm. Also, have
the
anesthesia delivery system inspected and evaluated at least annually as
scheduled.
Reference:
OSHA [2000] Anesthetic Gases: Guidelines for Working Exposures - NIOSH
recommends that no worker should be exposed at ceiling concentrations
greater than 2
ppm of any halogenated anesthetic agent, isoflurane being a halogenated
anesthetic agent,
over a sampling period not to exceed one hour.
