29 CFR 1926.55(a): Employee exposure to an airborne concentration of respirable silica quartz was in excess of calculated permissible exposure limit from Appendix A. An employee performing grinding and cutting operations on concrete from a manlift was exposed to respirable dust containing 6.7% crystalline silica (quartz) at a TWA level of 55.3 mppcf, approximately 2.5 times the limit of 21.4 mppcf; this limit is established to prevent silicosis. The exposure level is derived from one sample collected over a 221-minute period.

29 CFR 1926.55(b): Feasible administrative or engineering controls were not implemented to reduce employee exposures to or below the permissible exposure limit. An employee performing grinding and cutting operations on concrete from a manlift was exposed to respirable dust containing 6.7% crystalline silica (quartz) at a TWA level of 55.3 mppcf, approximately 2.5 times the limit of 21.4 mppcf. Engineering or administrative controls were not used to reduce exposures to or below the permissible exposure lmit. General methods of control applicable in these circumstances include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Utilizing tools equipped with local exhaust ventilation. 2. Rotating employees to ensure that exposures do not exceed the permissible exposure limit.
