Detachable side protectors (e.g. clip-on or slide-on side shields) meeting the pertinent requirements of this section are acceptable.    In the Production Area operators of vertical milling machines are exposed flying metal shavings and were wearing only safety glasses without any side protection.

One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks.     In the Shipping and Receiving Area an employee was exposed to an eight inch unused portion of the saw blade on a DoAll Horizontal Bandsaw Machine during its operation.

Pulleys, any parts of which are seven (7) feet or less from the floor or working platform, shall be guarded in accordance with the standards specified in paragraphs (m) and (o) of this section.     In the Shipping and Receiving Area an employee was exposed to the pinch points on the unguarded pulley, approximately three feet off the floor located at the rear of the Sears Craftsman Table Saw machine.

29 CFR 1910.213(h)(1):       The sides of the lower exposed portion of the blade shall be guarded to the full diameter of the blade by a device that will automatically adjust itself to the thickness of the stock and remain in contact with stock being cut to give maximum protection possible for the operation being performed.    In the Shipping and Receiving Area an operator was exposed to the saw blade of a Sears Craftsman 10 inch radial arm saw machine due to the plastic lower guard being stuck in the raised position.

29 CFR 1910.305(g)(2)(iii):     Flexible cords and cables shall be connected to devices and fittings so that strain relief is provided that will prevent pull from being directly transmitted to joints or terminal screws.    In the Production Area the outer insulation on the flexible power cord for an in use Pedestal Floor Fan was pulled away from the fitting exposing the internal insulated wiring and created strain on the terminal screws.
