OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1):     Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees exposed to a caught in hazard while working directly behind a brush chipper.    On or about November 18, 2011, at 30 N. Michigan Street in Belleville, IL., employees while operating a Vermeer 1800A Brush Chipper were exposed to caught-in hazards while feeding branches and brush. Employees were manually feeding branches to the in-feed table standing directly behind the machine.    Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard.    1  Conduct training for employees on the safe operating practices of the equipment in accordance with the manufacturers instruction in the Vermeer 1800A Brush Chipper Operators Manual and enforce those practices.    2 - Follow the standard of the American National Standards Institute Z133.1-2006, for Arboricultural Operations  Safety Requirements. Section 8.6 addresses training that is to be provided in the proper operation, feeding, starting, and shutdown procedures for the chipper being used.
