Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards while working with an auto lift: Instance A: Employees operating a surface mounted lift in Bay #1 of the shop were exposed to being struck by falling vehicles and the means to set and lock the lift arms was not maintained. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to ensure that the knobs are replaced lift is inspected and repaired in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, and company performs inspection and maintenance of the lift in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, or in accordance with the ALI/ANSI ALOIM 2008 Standard. Instance B: Employees operating lifts in Bay #1, and #5 of the shop were exposed to being struck by falling vehicles and the lifts were not labeled to communicate the rated loads of the lifts. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard would be to ensure that rated loads of the lifts are posted on or near the lift to indicate to the operator the capacity of the lift in use, and the company performs inspection and maintenance of the lift in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, or in accordance with the ALI/ANSI ALOIM 2008 Standard. Instance C: Employees operating lifts in Bay #1, #2 and #4 of the shop were exposed to being struck by falling vehicles and the employer did not maintain locks designed to hold the elevated carriage in place while supporting a vehicle. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard would be to ensure that locks were operating per the manufacturers requirements, and the company performs inspection and maintenance of the lift in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, or in accordance with the ALI/ANSI ALOIM 2008 Standard. Instance D: Employees operating a Rotary SP70 Model Auto Lift in Bay #5, were exposed to being struck by falling vehicles due to the unit leaking hydraulic oil. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to ensure that the lift is inspected and repaired in accordance with the manufacturers instruction, and the company performs inspection and maintenance of the lift in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations, or in accordance with the ALI/ANSI ALOIM 2008 Standard.
