29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. Employees engaged in manufacturing activities in the main shop and in the north addition were exposed to struck-by hazards in that machine guarding was not provided at the following pieces of equipment: a) Dayton 25 ton pneumatic press in the north addition b) DoAll horizontal band saw in the north addition c) Kawasaki drill press in the main shop d) Sunex drill press in the main shop e) Palmgren drill press in the main shop f) Sunex drill press in the main shop

29 CFR 1910.242(b): Compressed air used for cleaning. Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning purposes except where reduced to less than 30 p.s.i. and then only with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment. Employees engaged in production activities in the main shop and in the north addition were exposed to struck-by hazards while using compressed air for cleaning as the compressed air was not reduced to less than 30 psi at the following pieces of equipment: a) Mori Seiki CNC Vertical mills (5) in the main shop b) Daewoo mill #2 in the north addition c) Kira vertical mill in the north addition d) Sharp vertical mill in the north addition
