29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1): The employer did not assess the workplace to determine if hazards were present, or were likely to be present, which necessitated the use of personal protective equipment: On or about 21 June 2012, the employer did not assess hazards associated with melting gold and cleaning jewelry. No hazard assessment was performed for these operations to ensure that personal protective equipment, including but not limited to gloves and goggles were provided and used by jewelry fabricator(s) and polisher(s). a) A jewelry polisher used an ultrasonic water bath filled with Chemetall Oakite BCR (contains Monoethanolamine 10-20%, pH=10.5); Majestic Extra Strength Ammonia (pH 11.0) and water. An employee was observed dipping jewelry in the bath to clean off polishing residue then cleaning off the solution using steam (temperature equal to or greater than 100 degrees Celsius) without hand or eye protection against splashes. b) A jewelry fabricator was observed melting gold in a crucible using an oxy-acetylene welding torch without hand protection against thermal hazards of the welding flame (temperature equal or greater than 3500 degrees Celsius).
