29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. The employer failed to protect employees from potential pinch point/amputation hazards associated with operating an inadequately guarded casting press. This was most recently evident during the inspection of the facility located at 1341 West 2nd Street, Hastings, NE 68901, where the employer has employees the 36 line casting press to manufacture the sand casts used in the molding process, when an employee got a foot caught in an unguarded pinch point resulting in partial amputation of two toes on the right foot.
