29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. a. On or about July 30, 2012 - at the above addressed jobsite, an employee was exposed to struck by hazards while cutting the securing bands of a coiled roll of steel while it rested in Line 1 on a Cauffiel Steel coil machine, serial number 201. The employee cut two of the three securing bands and the third band failed releasing the stored energy of the coiled steel. The coil then fell out of the coil machine and onto the employee crushing him between the coil and the machine. Guarding was not provided by the employer, thereby exposing the employee to struck by hazards.
