29 CFR 1910.134(g)(1)(i)(A): Respirators with tight-fitting facepieces were worn by employees who had facial hair that came between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interfered with valve function: On or about October 24, 2012, the Derrickman using a tight-fitting facepiece was observed mixing Pels, Caustic Soda Beads in the mixing area of the mud pit. The employee was not clean-shaven. When a respirator must be worn to protect employees from airborne contaminants, it has to fit correctly, this require's the wearer's face to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against it. The employee was potentially exposed to inhalation of dust which was highly irritating and possibly corrosive to the upper respiratory tract, harmful or fatal if inhaled.
