29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. a. At the workplace, the employer did not provide guarding for an ingoing nip point, exposing employees to a caught-in hazard. A conveyer system located near the center of rough mill #1 was used to move stock from an optimizer and ripsaw that had been cut into pre determined lenghts. The chain and sprocket did not have a barrier guard to prevent employees from hazards associated with ingoing nip points.

29 CFR 1910.305(g)(1): Use of flexible cords and cables. 29 CFR 1910.305(g)(1)(iv)(A): As a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure; a. At the workplace, the employer used an extension cord as fixed wiring to plug in a foot treadle used to operate a scissor lift located in/or near the gluing area of the facility, exposing employees to a fire hazard. b. At the workplace, the employer used an extension cord as fixed wiring to plug in halogen lamps located near a Timesavers planer in building 3, that was used to identify imperfections in the stock that had been planed, exposing employees to a fire hazard.
