29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc: a. Located at assembly #2, employees were required to manually load shock absorbers into crates that were located on a turnstile. The turnstile would rotate so that employees did not have to reach completely across the crate when loading the shock absorbers. There was a gap of approximately 5-1/4 inches between the rotating turnstile and a drive motor mount, thereby exposing the employees to an ingoing nip point. American Showa was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard, which was contained in OSHA inspection number 313519803, citation number 1, item number 1 and was affirmed as a final order on August 25, 2009, with respect to a workplace located at 960 Cherry Street, Blanchester, Ohio 45107.
