OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by and crushing injuries from garbage collecting vehicles operating in reverse:  301 West St Petersham, MA: On or about February 26, 2013, an employee was backing up the Mack garbage truck and subsequently struck another employee working behind the truck to direct him:  Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to abate this hazard would be to implement the the requirements in ANSI Z245.1- 1999 Mobile Wastes and Recyclables Materials Collection, Transportation, and Compaction Equipment - Safety Requirements. Section 6.2.1 recommends that employees performing work as authorized by the employer, in and around mobile collection and transportation equipment only after being properly instructed and trained in safe work practices relative to the assigned work. Additionally, ensure employees follow recommendations contained in section 6.2.3.2 (f) & (g)  which recommends that when a vehicle is being operated in reverse,ensure that the area behind the vehicle is kept clear and not crossing or standing behind a vehicle operating in reverse.  Specific abatement documentation that this violation has been corrected must be provided within 10 days of the abatement in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1).
