They were provided with chemical cartridge respirators. The air inside was not considered IDLH requiring a full facepiece pressure demand SCBA or a combination full facepiece pressure demand supplied-air respirator with auxiliary self-contained air supply.

29 CFR 1910.146(c)(5)(ii)(C): Employees entered into permit spaces that met the conditions set forth in 29 CFR 1910.146(c)(5)(i) but before an employee entered the space, the internal atmosphere was not tested with a calibrated direct-reading instrument for potential toxic air contaminants: Employees entered totes to clean and remove liquid paint and paint residue. The air inside was tested for oxygen, explosive vapors, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide but it was not tested for the solvents or other chemicals in the paint including, but not limited to, xylene, toluene, kerosene, trimethyl benzene, mineral spirits, carbon black, titanium dioxide and silica.
