29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. a. At the worksite in Wellston, Ohio the bagger machine number 3 in the roll pack out area had an inadequate barrier guard in that it did not prevent the employees from being able to reach into the point of operation. The area where the bagger machine discharged product had an opening that employees could reach their arm into, and the barrier guard was only approximately 18 inches from where the machine cut and sealed the bags. b. At the worksite in Wellston, Ohio the bagger machine number 4 in the roll pack out area had an inadequate barrier guard in that it did not prevent the employees from being able to reach into the point of operation. The area where the bagger machine discharged product had an opening that employees could reach their arm into, and the barrier guard was only approximately 17 inches from where the machine cut and sealed the bags. c. At the worksite in Wellston, Ohio the bagger machine number 5 in the roll pack out area had an inadequate barrier guard in that it did not prevent the employees from being able to reach into the point of operation. The area where the bagger machine discharged product had an opening that employees could reach their arm into, and the barrier guard was only approximately 19 inches from where the machine cut and sealed the bags. d. At the worksite in Wellston, Ohio the bagger machine number 6A in the roll pack out area had an inadequate barrier guard in that it did not prevent the employees from being able to reach into the point of operation. The area where the bagger machine discharged product had an opening that employees could reach their arm into, and the barrier guard was only approximately 20 inches from where the machine cut and sealed the bags. e. At the worksite in Wellston, Ohio the bagger machine number 6B in the roll pack out area had an inadequate barrier guard in that it did not prevent the employees from being able to reach into the point of operation. The area where the bagger machine discharged product had an opening that employees could reach their arm into, and the barrier guard was only approximately 20 inches from where the machine cut and sealed the bags. f. At the worksite in Wellston, Ohio the bagger machine number 7 in the roll pack out area had an inadequate barrier guard in that it did not prevent the employees from being able to reach into the point of operation.
