29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1): Each employee in an excavation was not protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system designed in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.652(b) or (c): (a) Edge Contracting, Inc. at E Speer Blvd & Washington St, Denver, CO 80203: On June 2, 2013 the exposing employer did not ensure that employees working inside a trench consisting of type C soil and vertical walls were protected from cave-in, in that employees used shovels to remove soil under a pre-existing gas line without using a protective system. The gas line was perpendicular to the trench and located approximately halfway from the top and the bottom of the trench. The east side of the gas line measured approximately 5 feet 3 inches in depth. This condition exposed employees to a crushing hazard by excavation wall cave-in. Edge Contracting, Inc. was previously cited for a violation of the same or substantially similar condition of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard 29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1) which was contained in OSHA Inspection Number 311909089, Citation Number 2 Item 2 issued on December 1, 2008 and became Final Order on December 31, 2008 with respect to a workplace located at 54th and Broadway, Denver, CO 80601.
