29 CFR 1926.652(g)(2):  Excavation of material to a level greater than 2 feet below the bottom of a shield system was allowed when there were indications of a possible loss of soil from behind or below the bottom of the shield.   a)Mews at Laurel Creek, Centerton Rd., Moorestown, NJ:  On or about 6/25/13 LVN Construction Company employees working in a 13 foot deep trench excavation using an 8 foot tall trench shield were exposed to cave in / crushing hazards due to material being excavated to a level of 5 feet below the shield system.  The trench showed evidence of loss of soil from under and behind the shield.     NOTE: IN ADDITION TO ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION, THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS ITEM. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $1000.00 IN ACCORDANCE WITH 29 CFR 1903.19.
