OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing for likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to caught between/struck-by hazards and resulting blunt force trauma from roof truss collapse: a) Construction site, 2523 Heritage Center Drive, Building 500 - On or about January 9, 2014 Employees were installing lateral bracing on trusses spanning 43 feet, and did not install adequate temporary Top Chord Temporary Lateral Restraint (TCTLR) or bracing, resulting in a collapse of all the trusses erected between the girder trusses. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method would be: Follow recommendations of the Truss Plate Institute and Wood Truss Council of America BCSI-B2 or the BCSI-B2 Summary sheet Guide for Installation and Temporary Bracing, that was provided with the trusses by the manufacturer. These recommendations would include but not be limited to the following: 1. Install TCTLR as specified in steps 1 through 5 with maximum 8 feet on center as specified in table B2-1. 2. Install sheathing immediately as stated in the Step 5 regarding installing top chord diagonal bracing. 3. Install temporary bracing throughout, as specified in step 5 thru 8. 4. Pre-assemble trusses for installation as shown in alternate methods on p5, or as documented in BCSI-B11.
