29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. A. GRID CELL DEPARTMENT: 1. The rotating vertical shaft/drill of the Buffalo machine was partially unguarded. 2. The horizontal roller of the Straightener, unknown identification machine was unguarded. ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION. B. MACHINE SHOP: 1. The guard at the Cincinnati shear had three (3) broken areas of the guard creating shearing points. ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION. 2. The left unused portion of the structural Hem saw was unguarded.

29 CFR 1910.215(a)(2): Guard design. The safety guard shall cover the spindle end, nut, and flange projections. The safety guard shall be mounted so as to maintain proper alignment with the wheel, and the strength of the fastenings shall exceed the strength of the guard, except: A. MACHINE SHOP: 1. Both abrasive wheel ends of the Carboloy tool sharpener were unguarded. 2. Both diamond wheel ends of the Diamond tool grinder were unguarded. B. SMALLER MACHINE SHOP: The right abrasive wheel end nut and flange of the Stanley abrasive grinder was unguarded.
