(Drexel University) - The employer did not develop or implement a written hazard communication program for the employees who are exposed to hazardous chemicals such as, but not limited to, n-alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium when cleaning surfaces such as toilets, showers, sinks, and floors. This was observed on February 4, 2014.

29 CFR 1910.1200(h)(1): Employees were not provided effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of their initial assignment and whenever a new hazard that the employees had not been previously trained about was introduced into their work area: a) GCA Service Group, Inc. (Drexel University) - Employees who worked with and around the hazardous chemical Virex II 256 containing n-Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium had not been provided with training concerning the hazards of the chemical. Virex II 256, which can cause skin and eye irritation as well as dermatitis, is used daily by the housekeeping/maintenance staff on bathroom surfaces which include sinks, toilets, and showers. Observed on February 4, 2014.

29 CFR 1910.1030(c)(1)(i): The employer having employees with occupational exposure did not establish a written Exposure Control Plan designed to eliminate or minimize employee exposure: a) GSA Services Group, Inc. (Drexel University) - The employer did not develop a written exposure control plan for the maintenance staff who are occupationally exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials while cleaning surfaces contaminated with blood in the bathing area within the facility. This was observed on February 4, 2014. ABATEMENT NOTE: The exposure control plan shall contain at least the following elements: 1. An exposure determination; 2. The schedule and method of implementation: 3. Methods of Compliance; 4. Hepatitis B Vaccination and Post-Exposure Evaluation and Follow-Up; 5. Communication of Hazards to Employees; 6. Recordkeeping for this standard; and 7. The procedure for the evaluation of circumstances surrounding exposure incidents.
