OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to an explosion hazard from use of PVC thermoplastic piping to transport compressed air:  (a) Blue Fire Collision LLC, at 41 S Main Street, Longmont, CO:  On and preceding 4/7/14, Blue Fire Collision LLC did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to a struck-by hazard from use of PVC thermoplastic piping to transport compressed air.  Compressed air, approximately 100 psi, was transported in exposed PVC thermoplastic piping in the main bay.  PVC thermoplastic piping is not shatterproof.  The PVC thermoplastic piping was not enclosed in shatter resistant conduit.  The employer did not ensure that the piping for the compressed air system was rated for such use. This condition exposed employees to a struck-by hazard.  Abatement Note:  Among other methods, feasible abatement methods include:  (1) Abatement may be achieved through compliance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard D1785-86 "Standard Specification for Thermoplastic Gas Pressure Piping Systems".  (2) Abatement may be achieved through compliance with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Standard B31.8-1986 "Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems".
