29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. WORKSHOP: 1. Both end nuts of the 0373 Baldor buffer/grinder were unguarded. 2. The guard of the #18 chop saw, unknown identification was not secured to the saw. 3. The #16 vertical belt/disc sander was unguarded below the work rest. ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION.

29 CFR 1910.215(a)(2): Guard design. The safety guard shall cover the spindle end, nut, and flange projections. The safety guard shall be mounted so as to maintain proper alignment with the wheel, and the strength of the fastenings shall exceed the strength of the guard. WORKSHOP: The spindle end and flanges of the following surface grinders were unguarded: 1. #363 Harig Super 618 Walker Ceramix surface grinder. 2. #360 Harig Super 612 surface grinder; unguarded lower flange and end nut.

29 CFR 1910.215(b)(9): Exposure adjustment. Safety guards of the types described in Subparagraphs (3) and (4) of this paragraph, where the operator stands in front of the opening, shall be constructed so that the peripheral protecting member can be adjusted to the constantly decreasing diameter of the wheel. The maximum angular exposure above the horizontal plane of the wheel spindle as specified in paragraphs (b)(3) and (4) of this section shall never be exceeded, and the distance between the wheel periphery and the adjustable tongue or the end of the peripheral member at the top shall never exceed one-fourth inch. (See Figures O-18, O-19, O-20, O-21, O-22, and O-23.) WORKSHOP: The #1 United Stated heavy duty ball bearing grinder was not equipped with a tongue guard on the left abrasive wheel and the right tongue guard was not adjusted to one quarter (1/4) of an inch. ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION.

29 CFR 1910.178(p)(1): If at any time a powered industrial truck is found to be in need of repair, defective, or in any way unsafe, the truck shall be taken out of service until it has been restored to safe operating condition. WORKSHOP: The Linde powered industrial truck (PIT) had the following defects: 1. The cover to the shifts for the lift/tilt and the side to side was broken and cracked. 2. The back light was tape to the unit to prevent vibration. ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION.
