OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist or bridge crane system fail:    a)  Coating Dept., on or about 7/23/14:  A CM 500 lb. chain hoist at Coater #1 primer station had a broken safety latch on the lifting hook.    b)  Coating Dept., on or about 7/23/14:  A 500 lb. chain hoist at Coater #1 adhesive station had a broken safety latch on the lifting hook and the hoist had no rated load capacity markings on it.    c)  Coating Dept., on or about 7/23/14:  A CM one ton chain hoist at Coater #1 rewind station had a broken safety latch on the lifting hook.    d)  Shipping/Warehouse, on or about 7/23/14:  A Dayton 1500 lb. hoist at the roll doctor had a missing safety latch on the lifting hook.    e)  Short Run Dept., on or about 7/23/14:  A Harrington electric hoist rated for 1000 lbs. at the roll manipulator was attached to a Gorbel  bridge crane rated for 500 lbs.    Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to:    1.  Install new safety latches on the lifting hooks in accordance with ANSI B30.16 Section 16-1.2.9.    2.  Mark the rated load markings on the hoist.    3.  Mark the appropriate rated load markings on the bridge crane.    4.  Inspect the hoists/bridge cranes on a monthly/annual basis.    Abatement certification must be submitted for these items.
