29 CFR 1926.651(h)(1): Employees were working in excavations in which there was accumulated water, or excavations in which water was accumulating, and adequate precautions had not been taken to protect employees against the hazards posed by water accumulation. At a jobsite in Wood Dale, Illinois, employees were exposed to a cave-in hazard while working in a trench in excess of 20 feet in depth where water was accumulated at the base; equipment for water removal was not in use. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirement of 29 CFR 1903.19(c).

29 CFR 1926.651(k)(1): Daily inspections of excavations, the adjacent areas, and protective systems were not made by a competent person for evidence of a situation that could have resulted in possible cave-ins, indications of failure of protective systems(a) At a jobsite in Wood Dale, Illinois, a competent person did not conduct adequate daily inspections for a protective system that exceeded 20 feet in depth; employees were exposed to cave-in hazards. Abatement certification is required of this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(c).
