29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc.    WORKSHOP:  The parts of the following equipment were unguarded:      1.  Delta Belt sander/grinder; the right side unguarded rotating pulleys and horizontal shaft.   2.  Bench grinder, unknown identification; left end nut was unguarded.     3.  Victor lathe; coolant guard was bent exposing the employees to flying metal chips.  4.  HMT lathe; the end of the spring lever was held with a wire resulting in accidental start-up of the machine.

29 CFR 1910.215(a)(2): Guard design. The safety guard shall cover the spindle end, nut, and flange projections. The safety guard shall be mounted so as to maintain proper alignment with the wheel, and the strength of the fastenings shall exceed the strength of the guard, except:    WORKSHOP:  The following surface grinders were unguarded:        1. Brown & Sharpe surface grinder, 618 Micromaster; unguarded flange and nut and the guard on the wheel was not secured to the machine.    2.  Boyar-Schultz #618 Challenger surface grinder; the lower flange was unguarded.
