OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: a. Within the maintenance shop, on or about 03/09/15: An in ground, single post pneumatic automotive life was being operated without its sole safety support lock being operational. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to: Ensure all automotive lifts are operated in accordance with the Automotive Lift Institute, Inc. standard for automotive lifts, paragraph 4.4.2 which states; The operator shall use all applicable safety features provided on the automotive lift, and operate the lift in accordance with the instructions furnished by the lift manufacturer. In addition, with regard to lift inspections, follow paragraph 5.6.2.16 which states; ...On lifts employing continuous locking systems, check to ensure that the lift locks are operational and engage in all the intended points.... Also, with regard to lift inspector training, follow paragraph 4.2.1 which states; The owner or employer shall ensure that operators of automotive lifts are instructed in the safe use and operation of the lift using the manufacturer provided instructions and warning labels.... Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
