29 CFR 1926.651(k)(2): Where the competent person finds evidence of a situation that could result in a possible cave-in, indications of failure of protective systems, hazardous atmospheres, or other hazardous conditions, exposed employees shall be removed from the hazardous area until the necessary precautions have been taken to ensure their safety.    (a) EDGE Contracting, Inc. @ 7145 Raleigh Street, Westminster CO 80030:  On and before April 6th, 2015, the employer did not ensure that the competent person onsite would observe all safety requirements prior to allowing employees to enter the trench.   Five employees, including the competent person, were observed working in the trench without cave-in protection.  The trench measured approximately 5 feet deep on the west side and 8 feet deep  on the east side of the trench.  This condition exposed employees to a potential cave-in hazard associated with Class B soil and no protective system in place.

29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1): Each employee in an excavation shall be protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system designed in accordance with paragraph (b) or (c) of this section.      (a) EDGE Contracting, Inc. @ 7145 Raleigh Street, Westminster CO 80030:  On and before April 6th, 2015, the employer failed to ensure that trench box was installed prior to workers entering a trench to install municipal sewer upgrades. This condition exposed employees to cave-in hazards associated with working in a trench approximately 8 feet deep with Class B soil.      Edge Contracting was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard 29 CFR 1926.652 (a) (1), which was contained in OSHA inspection number 910211, citation number 1, item number 1, and was affirmed as a final order on 8/30/2013, with respect to a workplace located at E Speer Blvd & Washington Street, Denver CO 80203.
