29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. Machine guarding was not provided to protect operator(s) and other employees from hazards created by in-going nip points and rotating parts on the following machines: a.) Baldor Coil Cart Roller- The "coil roller" that unwinds the aluminum rolls did not have a guard to prevent employees from gaining access to the rotating powered roller. There are approximately 10 coil cart rollers. This exposed employees to a caught-in and crushing hazard. b.) Core Machine- The employer did not ensure that all rotating parts were guarded to protect the operators while hand-feeding the cardboard material into the machine. This exposed employees to a caught-in hazard. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d).

29 CFR 1910.215(a)(2): Guard design. The safety guard shall cover the spindle end, nut, and flange projections. The safety guard shall be mounted so as to maintain proper alignment with the wheel, and the strength of the fastenings shall exceed the strength of the guard. Tool Room: Abrasive wheel(s) used in the maintenance department, was not provided with safety guard(s) which covered the spindle nut on the following machines. Boyar-Schultz grinding machine S/N 421- The spindle nut was unguarded. This exposed employees to a caught-by hazard. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
