29 CFR 1910.23(c)(1): Every open-sided floor or platform 4 feet or more above adjacent floor or ground level shall be guarded by a standard railing (or the equivalent as specified in paragraph (e)(3) of this section) on all open sides except where there is entrance to a ramp, stairway, or fixed ladder. (a) On July 20, 2015, at the Macpresse Baler located at Batliner Paper Stock, Co (2501 Front St. Kansas City, MO 64120), employees were exposed to serious fall hazards from open-sided floors and/or platforms in the following instance: (1) Employee standing/squatting on top of the Macpresse Baler to perform maintenance/repairs without using fall protection. The distance between the top of the Macpresse Baler and the floor was 60 inches. Abatement certification is required for this item; use the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET for this purpose.
