OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards while working under automotive lifts with defective or missing swing arm safety locks.     Service Bay, 1179 East Columbus Avenue, Springfield, MA; Employees were required to work under extended automotive lifts with defective or missing swing arm safety locks that had not been inspected or maintained, exposing them to crushing hazards.  Two automotive lifts were in use with defective or missing swing arm safety locks.     Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement includes, but is not limited to, following the American National Standards Institute\ Automotive Lift Institute Standard for Automotive Lifts- ANSI\ALI ALOIM-2008 Safety Requirements for Operation, including but not limited to:    (a) Paragraph 4.2 Operation- Ensure operators are trained in the proper methods to inspect the lifts safely.  (b) Section 8, Replacement Parts- Safety latches that have been removed are replaced with parts approved by the original equipment manufacturer or with meeting original manufacturer specifications.  (c) Paragraph 6.2 Repair maintenance- Employer or owner shall perform repair maintenance whenever called for by the lift operator, qualified lift inspector or planned maintenance technician.     Brakes Plus, Inc., the successor to Brake King Automotive, Inc., was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1), which was contained in OSHA inspection number 315513598, citation number 1, item number 1 and was affirmed as a final order on 8/17/2011, with respect to a workplace located at 519 Front Street, Chicopee, MA 01013.
