29 CFR 1926.651(k)(1): An inspection of the excavations, the adjacent areas, and protective systems was not conducted by the competent person prior to the start of work and as needed throughout the shift:    a)  Gordon Road - East Of Sales Office - Future Sanitary Sewer Line, Robbinsville NJ:    Employees were exposed to struck by and caught in hazards when working in the bottom of a excavation cut in soil Type B with dimensions of approximately 17 feet wide, approximately 17 long, in excess of 9 feet deep on the East side, in excess of 5 feet deep on the South side, and in excess of 10 feet deep on the West side.  This excavation was improperly benched on its West side, improperly sloped on its North side and not shored/sloped/benched on its East and South sides. This excavation had not been inspected by a competent person as needed throughout the shift.  Observed on or about 08/13/15.    NOTE:  IN ADDITION TO ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION, THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS ITEM, FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $1000.00 IN ACCORDANCE WITH 29 CFR 1903.19.
