OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Section 5(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls and struck-by injuries from a truss collapse: (a) On or about September 24, 2015 for employees exposed to fall and struck-by hazards while setting prefabricated trusses approximately twenty feet high without temporary diagonal bracing at the Salt Storage building at or near 8100 43rd Avenue NE in Bismarck, North Dakota. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to adhere to the BCSI, Building Component Safety Information BCSI-B2 Truss Installation & Temporary Restraint/ Bracing, and Building Component Safety Information BCSI-B1 Summary Sheet, Guide for Handling, Installing, Restraining and Bracing of Trusses which states It is critical to note that all Lateral Restrains must be braced. Lateral Restraint by itself is not adequate to resist the buckling forces in the members to which it is attached without the rigidity provided by Bracing. Bracing is typically provided by adding Diagonal Bracing within the same plane of the Lateral Restraint or by anchoring the Lateral Restraint to a lateral force resisting member such as a shear wall.
