29 CFR 1910.141(a)(5): Every enclosed workplace was not so constructed, equipped, and maintained, so far as reasonably practicable, as to prevent the entrance or harborage of rodents, insects, and other vermin. A continuing and effective extermination program shall be instituted where their presence is detected. Location: Section F a. On or about December 16, 2015, during the inspection, there were numerous rats visible between floor pallets of this section and several rats were seen running on the floor between aisles where employees were working. The extermination program was not effective enough to control the rat population at this facility. Rat infestations can lead to diseases being transmitted to humans, such as leptospirosis and/or hantavirus. Symptoms of these diseases include, but are not limited to: vomiting, fever, liver failure, kidney damage, respiratory distress, and/or death.

29 CFR 1910.138(b): The employer did not base the selection of the appropriate hand protection on an evaluation of the performance characteristics of the hand protection relative to the task(s) to be performed, conditions present, duration of use, and the hazards and potential hazards identified: Location: Section F a. On or about December 16, 2015, the employer did not select the appropriate hand protection for employees exposed to contact with rat feces and urine. Employees filling orders in section F had contact and moved products that had been infested by rats and contaminated with feces and urine. The employees voluntarily used gloves which were not appropriate to control this contact hazard. Rat feces and urine contact can lead to diseases being transmitted to humans, such as leptospirosis and/or hantavirus. Symptoms of these diseases include, but are not limited to: vomiting, fever, liver failure, kidney damage, respiratory distress, and/or death.
