1910.213 G01

Serious Gravity 5 1 instance 1 exposed
Issued
Feb 9, 2016
Penalty
Initial $2,975 · Current $2,083 Reduced
29 CFR 1910.213(g)(1): Each swing cutoff saw was not provided with a hood that will completely enclose the upper half of the saw, the arbor end, and the point of operation at all positions of the saw. The hood was not constructed in such a manner and of such material that it would protect the operator from flying splinters and broken saw teeth. Its hood was not so designed that it would automatically cover the lower portion of the blade, so that when the saw was returned to the back of the table the hood would rise on top of the fence, and when the saw was moved forward the hood would drop on top of and remain in contact with the table or material being cut. On 2/01/2016, employees at Fehlig Bros. Box & Lumber Company were exposed to hazards such as those created by the point of operation at all positions of the saw. A Porter sliding cutoff saw, model number 47-A-20/serial number 76-5595, had the guard removed to enable the employees to cut 6 x 6 lumber.
