The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards therefor, or, in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be so designed and constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle: a. On or about June 2, 2016, on the banding line, employees were exposed to the point of operation between the banding head and coil while banding coils at the banding station.

29 CFR 1910.303(g)(2)(i): Except as elsewhere required or permitted by this standard, live parts of electric equipment operating at 50 volts or more shall be guarded against accidental contact by use of approved cabinets or other forms of approved enclosures or by any of the following means: a. On or about June 6, 2016, the cabinet door on the control junction box for the Herkules #9 roll grinder (RG 5315) was left open for cooling purposes and for a low voltage cable that was run through the door opening, thereby exposing employees to an electrical hazard. b. On or about June 6, 2016, the cabinet door on the control junction box for the Herkules #10 roll grinder (RG 5325) was left open for cooling purposes, thereby exposing employees to an electrical hazard.

One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc.: b. On or about June 2, 2016, on the banding line, the Braner downender was not adequately guarded at the end of its cycle when returning to the down position, thereby exposing employees to a caught-in and/or struck-by hazard.
