OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential crushing hazards from falling loads and/or lift parts from the improper operations or automobile lifts: a. Near the garage door, two in-ground automotive pad lifts - Employees were exposed to crushing hazards while they worked around in-ground automotive pad lifts. These lifts were not equipped with functioning safety locks, thus exposing employees to crush and struck-by hazards. Observed On or About January 11, 2016 Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to follow the requirements of American National Standard Institute (ANSI)/ Automotive Lift Institute (ALI): 2000, Standard for Automotive Lifts - Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection and Maintenance. which includes, among other requirements, the following: 1. Replace worn, damaged, or broken parts. 2. Provide training to employees on proper use and care of the lifts. 3. Ensure all lifts are rated and marked with their load capacity. 4. Schedule and complete all periodic and annual inspections. 5. Institute a preventative maintenance program according to the manufacturer's specification.
