29 CFR 1910.138(b): The employer did not base the selection of the appropriate hand protection on an evaluation of the performance characteristics of the hand protection relative to the task(s) to be performed, conditions present, duration of use, and the hazards and potential hazards identified.    a) On or about July 19, 2016, at Clinco Sheltered Industries, employees were exposed to a serious chemical hazard while unloading and opening bags of plastic sent to the facility for recycling, in that the employer did not base the selection of the appropriate hand protection on an evaluation of the performance characteristics of the hand protection relative to the task(s) to be performed, conditions present, duration of use, and the hazards and potential hazards identified. Gloves provided by the employer were not protective against corrosive chemicals including but not limited to concentrated bleach, cleaners, and degreasers found on plastic sent to the facility for recycling. An employee sustained second degree chemical burns to his right hand.

29 CFR 1910.151(c): Where employees were exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body were not provided within the work area for immediate emergency use:    a) On or about July 19, 2016, at Clinco Sheltered Industries, employees were exposed to a serious chemical hazard while unloading and opening bags of plastic sent to the facility for recycling, in that the employer did not provide suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body within the work area for immediate emergency use. An eyewash station was located in the cardboard area, on the other side of a wall and approximately 50 or more feet from the glass, metal, and plastic  unloading and sorting areas. An emergency shower is not present in the facility. Employees are exposed to corrosive chemicals including but not limited to concentrated bleach, cleaners, and degreasers found on plastic sent to the facility for recycling.
