The monitor was installed to monitor the concentration of chlorine in the chlorine room and to alert operators in the event of a chlorine leak. Employees are exposed to potential overexposures of chlorine if the exact concentration of chlorine in the room cannot be definitively determined. Abatement documentation is required of this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).

Employees are required to wear a respirator in the chlorine room to prevent exposure to chlorine from an unexpected leak. The employer has chosen a half-mask respirator with a protection factor of 10. The potential exposure from a leak can be much higher than 10 ppm. Abatement certification is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(c).
