OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by, crushed-by and/or fall hazards from the special purpose personnel elevator: Employees working on the ground floor level of the main elevator were exposed to struck-by hazards in that the landing opening for the special purpose personnel elevator was not adequately protected on the left side of the door by a barricade preventing entry or partial entry into the landing area when the elevator is traveling downward. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is: Enclose the landing area with a 7 foot door with controls of the manlift outside of the enclosed area in accordance with ASME A17-1-1996, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, in Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, Rule 1500.6a, Hoistway Doors and Gates, which requires that the full width of each landing opening be protected to its full height, or 7 feet, whichever is less by doors or gates.
