Ammonia sensors were used to notify employees of a release of ammonia as well as activate the ventilation system for the engine room. b) In relief vent pipe for the ammonia system, on or about 5/24/17: The employer did not perform periodic testing and calibration of the vent ammonia sensor.

In addition the emergency action plan did not include procedures for handling small releases. a) At the facility, on or about 6/29/2017: The emergency action plan did not include procedures for response to a small release of anhydrous ammonia from the refrigeration system. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.

29 CFR 1910.119(j)(5): The employer did not correct deficiencies in equipment that were outside acceptable limits (defined by the process safety information on paragraph (d) of this section) before use. a) North hallways of Floors 1,2, and 3, on or about 5/24/17: Conditions of visible corrosion on pipes, vapor barrier failure, broken insulation, and excessive ice accumulation identified by the employer during annual inspections of ammonia system piping were not corrected. These conditions were also previously identified by the employer during periodic inspections of the refrigeration system piping. Abatement documentation must be submitted for this item. Sodus Cold Storage Company, Inc. was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard, which was contained in OSHA inspection number 614158, citation number 2, item 1 and was affirmed as a final order on July 1, 2013 with respect to a workplace located at 50 Maple Avenue, Sodus, NY 14551.
