Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to workers:    Workers on residential waste collection routes were exposed to potential heat hazards during the performance of their duties.    Among several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to follow Waste Management of Texas, Inc.'s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Program, which follows relevant portions of the guidelines entitled OSHA's "Using the Heat Index: A Guide for Employers" and NIOSH's "Criteria for a Recommended  Standard, Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments."  Specifically, retraining drivers on the guidelines contained in Waste Management or Texas, Inc.'s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Program.  The retraining should include:    1.  Recognizing the signs and symptoms indicative of heat injury and/or illness; and  2.  Once the signs and symptoms indicative of heat injury and/or illness are recognized, the appropriate actions to be taken pursuant to Waste Management of Texas, Inc.'s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
