29 CFR 1910.23(d)(13)(ii): (ii) A minimum perpendicular distance of 30 inches (76 cm) from the centerline of the steps or rungs to the nearest object on the climbing side: Jobsite: Employees used a fixed ladder to access the rooftop during HVAC maintenance operations. There was a shelving a unit next to the fixed ladder. The placement of the shelving unit potentially impeded the safe ascent and descent from the ladder. On 10-27-17 An employee fell from the fixed ladder and hit the top of the shelving unit, went over the railing, and landed on the stairs below suffering serious injuries.
